Legal Counsel to Smartech// London
Smartech Retail Group is a global destination for innovation, delivering immersive retail experiences across our concept stores worldwide. We showcase the latest in gaming, e-mobility, and cutting-edge technology, giving customers a hands-on experience of the future. Now, together with Oddwork, we’re looking for a proactive Legal Counsel to take ownership of our legal operations and compliance, while also playing a key role in our collections and receivables processes, in close collaboration with finance, as the business continues to scale globally.
As Legal Counsel with ownership of collections
This is not a single-track role, it’s a dynamic blend of legal expertise, financial acumen and operational support. You will act as the company’s sole Legal Counsel with full and direct responsibility for all collections and accounts receivable functions, including debt recovery, overdue payment management and process optimisation, which are core to ongoing financial stability and growth. Alongside this, you’ll work closely with our Business Development team, providing the legal and operational backbone that keeps our brand relationships smooth, structured, and scalable.
A selection of your responsibilities includes:
Acting as the company’s in-house legal counsel, providing guidance on contracts, compliance and cross-border legal matters
Take 100 % ownership and end-to-end responsibility for collections and receivables, including overdue account follow-up, negotiations, reconciliation, reporting and strategic improvement of debtor processes.
Drafting, reviewing and negotiating legal documents such as NDAs, brand agreements and service contracts
Supporting the Business Development team with legal input, contract structures and onboarding documentation
Driving improvements in payment flows, operational efficiency and risk mitigation across legal and financial functions
Maintaining and optimising internal systems such as Xero, Monday.com and Google Sheets to support legal, financial and collections workflows
About you
You’re a sharp, commercially minded legal professional with an operational edge, equal parts strategist, problem solver and doer. With experience in legal counsel, contract negotiation or debt management, you know how to balance legal precision with business pragmatism. You move confidently between legal frameworks in the UK, EU and US, take ownership of your work and collaborate closely with both legal, finance and commercial stakeholders. Analytical yet hands-on, you thrive in fast paced environments where structure meets scale. You don’t need to be a collections expert from day one, but you’re confident in financial dialogue and motivated to take responsibility for collections and receivables as part of a broader legal role, whether that means drafting watertight agreements, navigating compliance matters or following up on outstanding payments with clarity and confidence.
A law degree and experience within legal counsel, commercial contracts or related legal roles
Experience working with commercial agreements, compliance matters and cross-border legal frameworks (UK, EU and/or US)
Proven experience with full collections responsibility and receivables ownership, not only legal oversight but active execution and improvement of collections processes.
A proactive, hands-on mindset and the ability to balance legal precision with business needs
Comfort working with tools like Xero, Google Sheets and Monday.com
